Specify it when the subfloor is flat, traffic is residential or light commercial, and the container cost per square metre matters more than the last increment of rigidity.

When not to
Step up to 5 or 6 mm if the subfloor has waves to hide, if trolleys or castors will run on it, or if impact sound between floors is a contract issue.
